George M. Murphy
George M. Murphy, age 84, of Menomonie, WI, passed away on Tuesday August 5, 2014 at the Neighbors of Dunn County in Menomonie.
George was born February 9, 1930 in Morris, MN the son of William J. and Mary Ellen (Dewane) Murphy. He attended country grade school in Horton Township and graduated from West Central School of Agriculture (WCSA) in Morris. George attended the University of Minnesota for two years and graduated with a degree in Agronomy from the University of Hawaii 1953. George started his career in the Sugar Cane Industry in Hawaii. He married Genevieve Torres on July 2, 1955 in Kohala, Hawaii. After their wedding, they moved to Morris, MN, where he taught at WCSA for five years. George then worked for Farmers Union Central Exchange (Cenex) in management and sales in Morris and in Wisconsin. They moved to Menomonie in 1973. After retirement from Cenex he worked as a sales representative for McKay Nursery and as a Real Estate Agent for Century 21.
George’s interest included bowling, golfing, taking care of his yard and gardening. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, and was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
George is survived by Gen, his wife of 59 years; three children, Ruth (Jim) Grundman of Osakis, MN, Michael (Randene) of Blaine, MN, Catherine Murphy of Minneapolis; six grandchildren, Sarah (Jesse) Branstad, Nicholas, Michael & Jacob (Ashley) Grundman, Madison & Austin Murphy; three great grandchildren, Aubrey, Evalyn & Mathias Branstad; one brother, James of West Des Moines, IA; two sisters, Mary Ellen Montonye and Rosalys Weiler both of Morris, MN.
He is preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Raymond.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 AM Saturday August 9, 2014 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Menomonie with Rev. John Mano officiating. Burial will be at a later date at the Calvary Cemetery in Morris, MN.
Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 PM Friday with a prayer service at 7:30 PM at the Rhiel Funeral Home in Menomonie and one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.
