Mary "Arcella" Bauer
Mary "Arcella" Bauer, age 87 of Marine on St. Croix, MN, formerly of Durand, died Friday, July 19, 2013 at her home in Marine on St. Croix, with her family by her side.
Arcella was born April 2, 1926 in Arkansaw, WI. She was the daughter of Clinton and Elizabeth (Fleming) Coburn. Arcella grew up in Arkansaw and graduated from Arkansaw High School. After high school, she joined the Cadet Nurse Corps, and attended and graduated from St. Francis School of Nursing (now the Viterbo University School of Nursing) in 1947, in preparation for serving in war theatres over seas.
After graduation, Arcella focused professionally on the healing arts through her service as a nurse in various hospitals in the Midwest and the West coast. Arcella began her expansive nursing career at the Gillette Hospital in Mondovi, WI. From there, she practiced nursing at St. Francis Hospital in LaCrosse, WI. Moving from the Midwest, she next applied her nursing expertise at the French Hospital in San Francisco, CA. She then came back to Durand and worked at the Sacred Heart Hospital run by the Benedictine nuns. During this time, Arcella married the love of her life, Galen Joseph Bauer on October 11, 1958 in Durand. After marriage, she continued to work and direct various departments in the hospital.
In 2011, Arcella was conferred as an Honorary Alumnae of Viterbo University. In addition, she was recognized by the Women in Service for America Memorial Foundation and entered onto the Cadet Nurse Corps Honor Roll in 2013.
Arcella's passion in life was being a healer and nurturer to all. She had latent artist talents that began to emerge later in life through various forms of tactile media. Throughout her life she demonstrated full commitment to the well being of others.
Arcella is survived by her daughter; Dr. Juanita (Geoff) IkutaSchodde of Marine on St. Croix, MN, three grandchildren; Cecelia, Karina and Quentin, all at home, one sister; Patricia Jordan of Minneapolis, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one daughter; Amy Cecile Bauer in infancy, three brothers; Kenneth, Patrick and Clinton Coburn Jr., and two sisters; Bonnita Zittel, and Bernadette Bauer.
