Lawrence J Michelbook
Lawrence Jerome Michelbook age 97, of Menomonie passed away on Sunday May 5, 2013 at Mayo Clinic Health System-Menomonie.
Lawrence was born September 13, 1915, in Menomonie to Nicholas and Anna (Jesse) Michelbook. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Menomonie and was a lifetime member. Lawrence grew up in Menomonie, attended St Joseph’s Grade School and graduated from Menomonie High School in 1937. He attended The Stout Institute for two and a half years, prior to joining the U.S. Navy in April of 1942; and served in the South Pacific during WW II. He received an honorable discharge in November of 1945. Lawrence married Betty (Schultz) Gugel on June 3, 1972.
Lawrence owned and operated Michelbook Marine for approximately 25 years. In October of 1946, he was among a group of Menomonie residents who chartered the Menomonie Lions Club, and continued his membership until his death. In 1996, he was recognized with the Melvin Jones Award, presented to Lion Club members for dedication and hard work. Lawrence also served on the Board of Directors for the Menomonie Area Chamber of Commerce, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the American Legion.
Lawrence and Betty enjoyed traveling and spending the winter months at their home in Lakeland, FL. Lawrence was an avid sports fan and is also know for his love of decorating inside and outside their home at Christmas time.
Lawrence is survived by his wife Betty, nephews and niece, Ron (Jan) Jordan of Menomonie; JoAnn (Warren) Wegenke of Payson, AZ; Bert (Carol) Jordan of Altoona; Glenn (Rhonda) Jordan of Phoenix, AZ.
He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Maurice, two sisters, Joan Michelbook and Ruth Jordan.
