Gene A. Van Schoonhoven age 78 of Elmwood,
Died: Thursday April 3, 2008 at the Heritage of Elmwood Nursing Home in Elmwood.
Gene was born December 23, 1929 in the Township of El Paso, Pierce County, rural Elmwood. He was the son of Carl and Minnie (Hase) Van Schoonhoven and grew up in the Waverly area, rural Elmwood. Gene attended the Lincoln Elementary School and in his youth, he hauled milk and cattle. Gene served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Camp Chaffee, Arkansas and in Alaska. After the service, he returned to the Elmwood area. Gene married Carol Stringer November 26, 1955 and they made their home in Elmwood. Gene drove truck for Hines Transfer for many years before he retired.
During his retirement, Gene enjoyed helping others by providing transportation, snow removal and lawn mowing. Almost every Sunday afternoon, he could be found at the Heritage of Elmwood Nursing Home playing cards. Gene looked forward to having coffee or going out to eat with his friends.
Gene is survived by two daughters, Barb (Scott) Supri and Brenda (William) Karnes both of Spring Valley, one son Michael of Elmwood, four grandchildren, Jacob and Jared Supri, Kyle and Jennifer Karnes, one sister Marjorie (Norbert) Raeschler of St. Paul, MN, three brothers, Bill (Ramona) of Plum City, Gerald (Joanne)of Balsam Lake;Marlyn (Sue) of St. Paul Park, MN, mother-in-law, Laura Stringer of Elmwood, other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Carol (2000), daughter Betty (1988), three brothers, twin brother Jack, Neil and Robert and one sister Juanita McMahon.
