Bette Jean Jacks, age 71 of Menomonie, died Saturday, February 18, 2012 at the Mayo Health Clinic Health Systems-Menomonie.

Bette Jean was born on December 2, 1940 in Pueblo, CO. She was the daughter of Neils Alvin and Edith Genevieve (Riordan) Monson. Bette Jean grew up in Pueblo and attended school there. She married Calvin Jacks Jr. on May 3, 1958 in Pueblo. Bette Jean lived with her family in Colorado until 1973 before moving to Durand, where she raised her family and was secretary of the Grace Episcopal Church in Menomonie. In 1997, Bette Jean moved to Menomonie where she remained the rest of her life.

Bette Jean was one of the founding members of the Pepin County Humane Society in 1982 and volunteered much of her time to it. Her faith was very important to Bette Jean, volunteering many hours working at church. Bette Jean was her mother’s caretaker for 23 years during her mother’s battle with Alzheimer’s. She enjoyed crocheting, donating many afghans to area nursing homes, she liked ceramics, was active in politics and was famous for her apple crisps for the church bake sales. Most of all, Bette Jean loved to spend time with her family and friends.

Bette Jean is survived by her children, Keith (Kim) of Durand, Christa (James) Guenther of Menomonie, Carla (Bill) Smith of Carroll, IA, Heather (Jeff) Wolf of Elk Mound and Bryan (Ellen) of Madison, 10 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, friends; Fr. Sampson Rogers and Jill Chase, nieces , nephews, other relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Calvin (1991), one brother, Robert Monson and one sister Janet Mayfield.
