Algie R Doughty
Algie R. Doughty, age 88, of Arkansaw, passed away Sunday, January 15, 2011 at the Oakview Care Center in Durand.
Algie was born March 27, 1923 in Rock Falls, to William "Wilson" and Pearl (Brownell) Wheeler. She married Roy L. Doughty on June 22, 1940. Algie and Roy started life together in the Twin Cities, where she worked as an elevator operator in the Curtiss Hotel for $0.65/hour. Later they moved to Pepin County, where they operated several small dairy farms in various locations. In 1990, they moved from Dead Lake prairie to the village of Arkansaw where they resided until November 2009 when they relocated to Oakview Care Center. Roy's work often took him away from home and during these periods Algie ran the large household and managed the dairy farm, greenhouses, produce gardens and Christmas tree sales on her own.
Algie loved music and dancing. In her youth, she played piano at church services. She was well known for her good works in the community such as working and managing the meal site located in the Arkansaw Methodist Church, assisting with funeral lunches, making hundreds of prized apple pies for annual church sales and offering to assist any in need in the community. She served many years as a Pepin County home care worker helping the elderly and disabled, often volunteering to stay overnight. Algie worked with other members of her family and community to maintain and improve the appearance of the Arkansaw cemetery.
Algie was preceded in death by son Robert, her parents, brother Everett, sister Violet (Art) Fosberg, sister Inez (Earl) Severson, and granddaughters Miccayla Rose Doughty and Summer Faye Doughty.
Algie is survived by Roy, her husband of 71 years, and children: Dallas (Judith) Yakima, WA; Audrey (William) Haverstock, Shakopee, MN; Norma (Steve Howarth) Bilderback, Eau Claire; Dennis, Chippewa Falls; Emmet (Barbara) Hager City, Gayle (Warren) Schmitt, North Branch, MN; John, Arkansaw; Dana Luther, Durand; and Jeff (Dayna) Arkansaw. Also survived by 19 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
