Edward F Mulligan

Edward F. Mulligan age 93 of Durand, formerly of Detroit Lakes, MN, died Sunday June 5, 2011 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire.

Ed was born March 25, 1918 in Pumpkin Hollow of Pine Island, MN. He was the son of John and Anna (Culley) Mulligan. At a young age, Ed moved with his family to Plainview, MN and graduated from Plainview High School. After high school Ed joined the U.S. Army and served during WWII in Guadalcanal as a medic, earning a Bronze Star. During World War II he spent over 3 years on the Pacific Front on various islands, including Guadalcanal, New Caledonia, Cebu, Dahol, Leyte and Mindinsow in the Philippines. When WWII ended in 1945, he returned home and graduated from the Dunwoody Institute as an architectural draftsman. Ed married Julienne Gervais July 27, 1946, and they built their home in Barnesville, MN. In 1956, Ed built a home in Detroit Lakes, MN where he and Julie raised their seven children. Julie passed away March 4, 1977. Ed continued to live in Detroit Lakes until 2003 when he moved to Durand to be closer to his family.

Ed especially enjoyed art, oil painting, photography, inventing, gardening, reading, writing and swimming. He authored a history of the 164th Infantry, was active in the 164th Infantry Veterans Association and created a large diorama of the battle of Guadalcanal for the WWII museum in North Dakota.

Ed is survived by his children, Mary Senkus, Hudson, WI; Gerald (Marian) Mulligan, Marshfield, WI; Maureen Mulligan, Eugene, OR; Terri (Dave) Reiland, Durand, WI; John (Dee) Mulligan, Hong Kong; Edward (Betty Bekemeier) Mulligan, Seattle, WA; and special friend, Marion Brunner, Durand, WI. He also leaves nine grandchildren, Cristin Mulligan, Las Vegas, NV; Kelly Mulligan, Bloomington, MN; Kati (Zach) Longsdorf, Eden Prairie, MN; Lisa (Eric) Arkowski, Eau Claire, WI; Matt Reiland, Minneapolis, MN; Liana Reiland, Duluth, MN; Andrew Mulligan, Anchorage, AK; Ean Mulligan, Hong Kong; and Erin Mulligan, Hong Kong. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Julienne Mulligan, his son, Joseph Mulligan, his son-in-law Raymond Senkus, two brothers, his twin John Mulligan and Jim Mulligan, three sisters Florence Whitehair, Chris Goetz and Josephine Mulligan.
