Gerald R "Jerry" Weier
Gerald R. “Jerry” Weier, age 83 of Menomonie, passed away peacefully at his home, with his loved ones by his side, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Jerry was born on January 11, 1927 to Fred and Lottie (Karnes) Weier. He grew up on the family farm in the Menomonie area of Dunn County. Jerry joined the Navy in 1944 and served as a Seabee during WWII in the Pacific Theatre. He was very proud to have served his country. After returning from the war, Jerry met and married his wife of 63 years, Betty Brown. They were united in marriage on January 24, 1948 in Eau Claire. Together they had three children, Susan, Rick and Annie. Jerry worked for the City of Eau Claire for 31 years, retiring as the superintendent of the water department. During his career at the city, he also served as the union president, a position her took great pride in. Jerry retired in March of 1982 from the City of Eau Claire.
In 1977 Jerry and Betty bought Elk Point Tavern & Resort on Upper Tainter Lake. They owned and operated the business until they sold it in February of 1982. During their years there, Jerry made it his project to build a softball field. Jerry and his friends spent many hours until the field was a success. He was also one of the founding members of the Tainter Lake Sportsman’s Club. Jerry and Betty also spent 25 wonderful winters in Florida.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Betty, daughter, Sue McCann (Maurice Trask) of Cedar Falls, Sue’s children, Katie McCann and Kelly (Tom) Messerschmidt, son, Rick of Menomonie, Rick’s daughter, Lindsay Weier, daughter, Annie Anderson (Bruce Sieben) of Wheeler, Annie’s children, Jeanna (Troy) Hollister, Jamie (Cory) Wright and Patrick Anderson, Great grandchildren, Coletraine and Benett McCann, Andrew and Oliver Messerschmidt, Trenton, Trevor and Chase Hollister, Allison Burnett, Ava and Molly Wright, two brothers, Mike (Joan) Weier of Elk River, MN, Fred (Dianne) Weier of Strum, one aunt, Eunice Metling of Menomonie, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, one grandson, Derek Dill, one brother, Dale Weier, son-in-law, Roger Anderson and a great nephew, Travis Weier.
