Philip P Berger

Philip P. Berger, age 87 of Arkansaw, died Thursday, October 28, 2010 at home with his family by his side.

Phil was born on May 26, 1923 in the Town of Lima, rural Durand. He was the son of Vincent and Mary (Bauer) Berger. Phil grew up in the Lima area and attended the Holy Rosary School in Lima. Phil farmed on various farms in the area. He married Catherine Schlosser on September 18, 1945. After marriage they continued farming and raising their 10 children. In 1964, Phil went to work for the Pepin County Highway Department and worked his way up to the foreman position. He retired from the highway department in 1988.

In retirement, Phil enjoyed carpentry and loved being around horses. His dream was to have a team of ponies with a homemade wagon. Phil was in an Old Time Polka Band with his family using instruments they made. He also loved to watch the Big Joe Polka Show on TV every week. Phil’s faith was very important to him; he said the rosary and other prayers every day. Most of all, Phil loved to spend time with family and friends.

Phil is survived by five daughters, Carol (Horace) Hurlburt, Lynette (Jim) Johnson, both of Eau Galle, Linda Mason of Durand, Jean (Ronald) Passe of Bay City and Pauline (Jeff) Myers of Arkansaw, five sons, Richard (friend, Connie) of Wilson, Robert of Durand, Ronald (friend, Karen) of Plum City, Gary (Mary) of Chippewa Falls and Denny of Madison, 40 grandchildren, 59 great grandchildren, one brother, Joe (Hazel) of Durand, four sisters, Anna Wayne, Theresa (Harold) Wood, both of Eau Galle, Dorothy (Robert) Pecha of Menomonie and Margaret (Casper) Bechel of Mondovi, four brothers-in-law, Carl Robelia of Durand, James Schlosser of Arkansaw, Bernard (Beatrice) Schlosser of Durand and Leonard (Louetta) Schlosser of Elmwood, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Catherine, one daughter in infancy, Barb, a grandson in infancy, Eric Myers, a great grandson in infancy, Brett Hurlburt, six sisters, Cecelia Prissel, Mary Endl, Rose Manor, Helen Robelia, Lucy King and Doris Berger and two brothers, Carl Berger and Richard Berger in infancy.
