Dorothy C. Benson age 92 of Menomonie, died peacefully on Saturday, September 12, 2009 at the Dunn County Health Care Center in Menomonie. She suffered a stroke on September 1 and died from the complications.

Dorothy was born on January 10, 1917 to Charles and Harriet (Ellis) McGee, in Glenwood City. She was one of nine children and enjoyed being raised at the Glenwood City farm. Dorothy graduated from Glenwood City High School. Later, she attended Hunter College in New York City, NY, Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, OK, and graduated from the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire. She taught elementary school for more than 30 years in Baldwin-Woodville and Menomonie. Dorothy retired from teaching in 1979. She believed education was the key to everything.

Dorothy served in the female branch of the Navy (W.A.V.E.S.) for 2 ½ years during WWII. After completing that duty, Dorothy married John (Jack) Benson in November of 1947. They raised their children, John, Mary Beth and Brian at their home in Menomonie.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Mary Beth (Paul) Benson-Shea of Madison and their son, Jordan, John J. (Jeanette) Benson of Portland, OR, and their daughter Anne and Brian A. Benson of Menomonie, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Also Dorothy’s cherished Brittany Spaniel, Buddy is a survivor.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband, John, her brothers, Merwin, Lyle, Warren and Richard McGee, sisters, Helen, Sharlene, Donna Mae and Ines.

Dorothy lived a long, complete and successful life. Her family and friends held the greatest love and respect for her. While it is a sad time, it is also a time for a renewal and celebration of life.
