John N. Brantner
John N. Brantner, age 84 of Pepin, died Friday, January 27, 2017 at Pepin Health and Rehab with family by his side after a courageous battle with cancer.
John was born on January 24, 1933 at home in the Town of Lima, rural Durand. He was the son of George and Hannah (Berger) Brantner, he grew up in the Lima, Durand and Ella areas. After school he farmed with his Dad for several years. John served in the U.S. Navy for two years, serving in Okinawa, Japan, Hong Kong and Korea before being Honorably Discharged. He married Alice Hedberg of Pepin on May 20 1961 at St. Josephs in Arkansaw. After marriage they lived around the Pepin, Nelson and Plum City areas all their life. John worked at Schurth’s Manufacturing in Pepin, Valley Craft in Lake City, MN and Meyers in Hager City for 27 years as a welder. He retired from there in 1998.
John enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also liked to go camping by Potato Lake and Chetek. John was always tinkering around the house fixing it up and doing small welding projects for neighbors. Most of all, John loved spending time with family and friends.
John is survived by his wife of 55 years; Alice, two sons; Kevin of Pepin and Gregory (Brenda) of Hager City, five grandchildren; Kyle (Renee) Brantner, Kayla (Kaleb) Bray, Tyler, Travis and Toby Brantner, five great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, six sisters; Margaret Davis, Frances Smith, Doris Sanders, Beatrice Anderson, Margie Kuehl and Rose Stewart and six brothers; Robert, Fred, Paul, Gale, Phil and George.
Funeral Services will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at the Rhiel Funeral Home in Durand with Rev. Dan Richardson officiating. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery in Pepin with Military Honors provided by the Durand American Legion Post #181 of Durand. Visitation will be held Monday from 4-8 PM at the Rhiel Funeral Home in Durand and one hour prior to services at the funeral home on Tuesday.
