Doris M. Lowry
Doris Marguerite (Scott) Lowry age 99 of Menomonie died Tuesday March 8, 2016 at The Neighbors of Dunn County. She was born June 13, 1916 in Presque Isle, Maine to Frank L and Margaret (Kempton) Scott.
Doris graduated from Presque Isle High School in 1934, and Normal School in 1936. She was an elementary teacher in Robinson, Maine.
Doris met her husband, Edward Lowry, in her home town in 1943, and they were married August 25, 1944 at the Air Force base chapel in Orlando, FL. They lived off base in Winter Park, FL. They moved to East Lansing, MI where Doris taught school. They later moved to Columbia, Missouri in 1949 where they became united with their first and only daughter, Katherine Blanche, while Ed was finishing his Doctorate at the University of Missouri. In 1954 they moved to Raleigh, NC where they were joined by their son Charles Edward. The family moved to Menomonie, WI in 1959.
Doris was a member of Eastern Star and the First Congregational Church, UCC. She knit many pairs of mittens for the church mitten tree, and also taught Sunday School. Ed, Doris and the children spent many enjoyable summers at the University’s Pigeon Lake Field Station, where Ed taught summer biology courses.
Ed & Doris’s great love of the outdoors led them to Northern Minnesota where they built a cabin on Poplar Lake, along the Gunflint Trail. They was completed with the help of many friends and co-workers.
Doris spent several months at the Dunn County Health Care Center in 2006, rehabilitating from a fall. She returned home and met the challenge head on, of staying in her own home that meant so much to her. Thanks to her hard work, patience, humor, having her cat Polly by her side, and many friends who supported Doris’s enthusiasm and determination, she remained home until July of 2009. After another fall, she returned to the Health Care Center, and was one of the first residents to move to The Neighbors of Dunn County in 2013, where she spent her remaining years.
At her home as well at the Inglenook Neighborhood, Doris continued with her ability to appreciate her surroundings, and live a full life. She was a voracious and diverse reader, loved the outdoors, watching the birds at her feeders, discussing politics, having visits with friends and receiving letters and phone calls from family.
Doris is survived by her two children, Katherine and Charles, her dear nieces, Dorothy Blake, Delores Roix, and Helen (Alden) York, her sweet cat Polly, many great nieces, nephews, and many devoted friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ed in 2003, two sisters, Una Glidden and Laila Fahey, one brother Frank Scott, Jr, nieces, nephews and two very special friends who Doris met while living at Inglenook Terrace.
A gathering of friends will be held at The Neighbors of Dunn County, Inglenook Terrace from 2:00 to 3:00 PM Wednesday March 23, 2016. Directly following the gathering Ed and Doris will be buried together at the Evergreen Cemetery in Menomonie.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to First Congregational Church or the Dunn County Humane Society.
A heartfelt thanks to loving and dedicated staff of Inglenook Terrace over the years, and especially for the very special time, care and love you gave these last few months.
