Mabel J. Fritz

Mabel J. Fritz, age 91 of Elmwood, died Wednesday July 22, 2015 at the Heritage of Elmwood Nursing Home in Elmwood.

Mabel was born July 12, 1924 in the Township of Dunn, Dunn County. She was the daughter of Raymond “Jim” and Wilhelmina (Kistner) Smith. Mabel grew up in the Downsville community. She attended Downsville State Graded Elementary school and graduated from Menomonie High School in 1943. After high school, Mabel worked at the Downsville Creamery. She Married Warren J. Fritz on July 15, 1944 at Peace Lutheran Church in Menomonie. After marriage they lived mostly in the Elmwood area where they farmed for many years, retiring in 1974. In 1975 they moved into Elmwood where Mabel worked for Glen and Dorothy Nelson for 44 years at the Laundromat. For the last year, Mabel lived at Welcome Home Assisted Living in Elmwood.

Mabel was an active member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church for over 55 years, the American Legion Auxiliary Post #207 of Elmwood and a member of the Elmwood Enrichment council. She volunteered for the American Red Cross blood mobile and worked the village election polls. Mabel enjoyed playing cards, crocheting, traveling, and going to her morning coffee group.

Mabel is survived by her daughter, Jane (Rick) Lecheler of Menomonie; two sons, Dick (Virgie) of Eau Galle; Mike (Jenise) of Knapp; eight grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, one sister-in-law; June Fritz of Elmwood, niece, nephews, other relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband; Warren, one grandson-in-law; Mark Bechel and four brothers; Robert Smith, Verne Smith, Elbert Smith and Marvin Smith.

The family would like to thank Dr. Carrie Nelson and the staff at both Welcome Home Assisted Living and Heritage of Elmwood Nursing Home for all their loving care and support.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 AM Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Elmwood. Rev. Martin Wegner will officiate. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Downsville. Friends may call Monday from 5-7 PM at the Welcome Home Assisted Living at 121 Industrial Drive in Elmwood and one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.
