Rosemary E. Carlisle
Rosemary E. (Schlosser) Carlisle, age 84 of Arkansaw, died Tuesday, May 26, 2015 at the Chippewa Valley Hospital in Durand with her family by her side after a brief battle with cancer.
Rosie was born on July 11, 1930 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire. She was the daughter of Oscar R. and Anna (Traun) Schlosser of Bear Creek, Town of Canton, rural Buffalo County. Rosie was raised on the farm until she was 12 years old when her dad retired and moved to Durand. At the age of 10, Rosie’s mother died of cancer at the age of 50. Rosie attended Sacred Heart School in Lima and graduated from Durand High School in 1948, the fourth highest grade point in a class of 52 students. After high school, Rosie worked as a deputy at the Register of Deeds office in Pepin County. Rosie married Robert Carlisle of Durand in 1950. They moved to Juneau, Alaska where she found work as a secretary at a local government agency. Rosie followed her husband to Anchorage, AK after he was drafted into the U.S. Army. In 1953, they moved to Homer, AK to homestead 160 acres offered by the Federal Government, where Robert was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease. They moved to Seattle, Washington for treatments, then to Durand for a short time and then to Vancouver, WA for several years before returning to Arkansaw-Durand area, where she remained the rest of her life. While in Washington, Rosie worked for the U.S. Forest Services as an accountant for 10 years. Upon moving back to Durand, Rosie worked for the Farmer’s Home Administration in Alma and Durand for 10 years, she also worked for Dave Morey, Attorney at Law, in Durand. Rosie decided to run for office in 1980 and was elected as the Pepin County Clerk of Court for 26 years.
Rosie was a member of the Wisconsin Clerk of Court Association, was a Notary Public, a member of the Pepin County Homemaker’s, she started the infant seat program along with the hospital auxiliary, organist at St. Mary’s and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church for 30 years and was a Eucharistic Minister as well. Rosie was an avid reader, was a sharp shooter and hunter in her younger years, she loved her job as clerk of court and helping the people of Pepin County. Most of all, Rosie loved her husband, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Rosie is survived by her children, Sandra (Charles) Baker of Athens, AL; Timothy (Ann Oberding) of Durand; Cynthia (Brian) Anderson of Viroqua; LTC (R) Thomas (Nancy) of Cataula, GA; Patrick (Jean) of Downsville, 17 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren, two sisters; Barb Bauer and Fran Hurlburt, both of Durand, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Robert, two children; Kathryn M’Liss Carlisle and Robert Thurston Carlisle, two brothers; John and Eddie Schlosser, three sisters; Sister Margaret Ann Schlosser, Dorothy Anibas and Margie Weisenbeck.
The family would like to thank the staff and administration of the Chippewa Valley Hospital for their tremendous support and care for Rosie.
Funeral Mass will be 11:30 AM Monday, June 1, 2015 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Durand with Rev. Jerry Hoeser officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Arkansaw. Visitation will be held from 5-8 PM Sunday at the Rhiel Funeral Home in Durand and one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.
