Eugene H. "Shag" Skjegstad

Eugene “Shag” H. Skjegstad, age 100, of Menomonie, died peacefully on Friday November 28, 2025, at the American Lutheran Home in Menomonie.

Gene was born July 20, 1925, in Menomonie, the son of Ole and Vivian (Nelson) Skjegstad. He graduated from Menomonie High School and completed two years at The Stout Institute.  Gene married Virginia Stoll October 16, 1950, in Menomonie.

As a life-long resident of Menomonie Gene worked for the railroad, drove taxi, city bus and school bus. Most of his career was spent in car & truck sales. He worked at Berg’s Chevrolet, Halvorson GMC and North Town Ford.

Music was his passion. He played in several dance bands in college and the Ludington Guard Band for 42 years. Over the years he sang with various groups. He also enjoyed drawing, painting and model railroading.

He was an active member of the Loyal Order of the Moose and was a volunteer at the Dunn County Historical Society.

Gene is survived by his wife of 75 years, Virginia, three children, Steven (Gigi) of Anchorage, AK, Sandra (Larry) Hamler of Eau Claire, Linda (Niles) Van Blaricom of Menomonie; five grandchildren, Elizabeth Bauer, Jesse Skjegstad, Troy Hamler, Greg Hamler and Mitch (Alicia) Van Blaricom, several great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Further survived by brothers-in-law Wally (Betty) Stoll and Bill (Rose Mary) Stoll.

He is preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Karen Bauer and her husband Richard Bauer. Brother-in-law Jim Stoll and his wife Mary Alice.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Tuesday December 9, 2025, at Rhiel Funeral Home in Menomonie with Rev. John Mano officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Menomonie at a later date.

Visitation will be at the funeral home on Tuesday, one hour prior to services with a Moose Ritual Ceremony at 1:45.

The family would like to thank the staff at the American Lutheran Home for their great care and kindness.

    We send our condolences and love to Virginia and family. We met the Skjegstads at the Moose Lodge and Gene was a very active and proud member. We especially enjoyed visiting while assembling the newsletter.
