Dorothy M. Hengst - 11-29-2008
Dorothy Mae Hengst, age 89 of Durand, WI, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday November 29, 2008 at the Plum City Care Center in Plum City.
Dorothy was born on June 27, 1919 in Durand, WI to George Alda Bundy and Mary (Brenner) Bundy. She had two brothers and three sisters. Dorothy attended St. Mary’s Grade School in Durand through the eighth grade. She worked at odd jobs in the Durand area until her marriage to Anton “Tony” Hengst on November 9, 1938 at St. Mary’s Church in Durand. They farmed on various farms in the Durand area until Tony was inducted in the U.S. Army during WW II. While Tony was stationed in the South Pacific during the war, Dorothy worked at both Gillette and Presto Munitions Plants.
After the war and Tony’s discharge from military service, they returned to farming in the Durand area until their retirement. They were never blessed with any children, but enjoyed their nieces and nephews. In retirement, Dorothy and Tony enjoyed a trip to Europe and traveling throughout the United States.
Dorothy enjoyed dancing and was an avid card player. “I bid 10 diamonds! Beat that!!” She worked very hard on the farm and was a wonderful cook. She enjoyed having company and family gatherings. In her later years, Dorothy volunteered at the Senior Center in Durand. She was a lifetime member of St. Mary’s Church in Durand.
Dorothy is survived by one brother, Robert (Dorothy) Bundy of Winona, MN, and many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Tony, one brother, Erwin Bundy and three sisters, Margaret Drazkowski, Alvera Olney and Florence Fredrickson.
The family would like to thank Marge Traun for the loving care and support she gave Dorothy during the past several years. We would also like to thank the staff at the Plum City Care Center for their care and concern during Dorothy’s stay at the Care Center.
Rest in peace, Dorothy. We will miss you very much!
Funeral services will be 11:30 AM Thursday December 4, 2008 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Durand. Fr. Jeffrey Burrill will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
